First published in 1932, Indian Caste Customs is an explication on
how caste system operates in everyday life. What are its
injunctions and prohibitions? What actions constitute offences
against its moral law and social honour? What are the means by
which breaches of that code are adjudicated? What are the penalties
inflicted on offenders? The book attempts to answer these questions
as well as discuss the merits and demerits of the caste system in
India. This book will be of interest to students of history,
sociology, anthropology and South Asian studies.
First published in 1937, India's Social Heritage is intended to
give a simple statement of the principal features of the social
system in pre-independence India. The social system of
pre-Independence India retained many features characteristic of an
early stage of social growth. Society was still largely communal in
the sense that it was organized in groups. Individual life was
based on collective standards and had to be in harmony as a unit in
a group, to whose interests his own were subordinate. The social
system may be described as a synthesis of groups rather than
persons, while the joint family was the basis of Hindu law. This
book will be of interest to students of history, sociology and
South Asian studies.
Originally published in 1932, this book presents a concise study of
the Indian caste system. The text was created 'in the hope of
adding to the ordinary man's knowledge of this peculiar form of
social organization and of enabling him to form a judgment of its
merits and defects'. Textual notes are included throughout. This
book will be of value to anyone with an interest in anthropology
and perspectives on the Indian caste system.
The Provincial Geography of India series was created during the
early part of the twentieth century to provide the general reader
with introductory texts on the characteristic features of the
various Indian provinces. This volume, which was originally
published in 1917, concentrates on the area comprising the
districts of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa, Sikkim. As with the other
books in the series, a highly readable analysis is provided, moving
through the various geographical features of the region, both human
and physical. Numerous illustrative figures are also present,
including maps, tables, and photographs. This book will be of value
to anyone with an interest in the colonial period and Indian
geography.
Originally published in 1935, this volume provides a discussion of
the structures of belief and practice in popular Hinduism. Taking
into account the complexity of Hinduism, and its position as a
composite religion of many diverse elements, the text goes on to
find certain common elements which draw together its various
aspects. The relationship between Hinduism and social organisation
is also considered, with detailed discussion regarding the
importance of the caste system. This book will be of value to
anyone with an interest in historical interpretations of Hinduism
and religious studies in general.
